Square Foot Gardening

in Bermuda

Can you think of any place nicer than Bermuda to garden in?

For that matter, just to visit? Hotel Mel stayed in while visiting Bermuda.

I had the honor of being invited by the Minister of Agriculture of Bermuda to come and speak at their Annual Spring Fair. What an exciting trip that was.

This is one of the places I stayed at.

How do you get around in Bermuda?

By motorbike.  The roaMel on his motorbike.ds are narrow and, being English, they drive on the wrong side of the road. Of course they don’t think it’s the wrong side, but it takes a little bit of getting used to, and you have to be very careful as you pull out into traffic to remember which way you are going and which side of the road is the proper side.

Plants grow well in Bermuda, but it’s surprising that the seasons are really similar to those in the more tropical areas of the United States, and, as I found out after traveling all around the world, Square Foot Gardening works perfectly everywhere.  In fact, because Bermuda is an island that has just so much space, and most everything they eat has to be flown in, in addition the soil is mostly coral rock, the above ground reduced space Square Foot Gardening method is ideal.

One of the major nurseriesMel giving a presentation. there helped promote the idea of Square Foot Gardening and hosted several of my demonstrations and lectures. We got many people interested in composting, and again I found that as everywhere in the world, people want to compost but don’t know exactly how or are a little afraid of it. We emphasize and encourage as much as possible in Square Foot Gardening for every household to compost in their own  backyard.  It’s an extremely ecological and important thing for all of us to be doing no matter where we live in the world.

In additionDemonstration tiered Square Foot Gardens at the Royal Botanical Gardens. to the main Spring Fair and the nursery work, I also worked with many of the schools there, (more about that in future columns), as well as helping to install a demonstration Square Foot Garden at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Georgetown. We built several style gardens – most of them tiered because we wanted a real showcase there.

The people of Bermuda are warm and friendly and very interested in gardening.  I’ll bet if I put out a call for volunteers to go back and see how our programs are doing, we’d get a very good response.
