!!
Registration
is necessary to enter the contest so get registered now and start
planning your project. Fill out the application below and get a
lesson plan at half price. Then start planning your project
for 2008.
From the Square Foot Garden Foundation
A yearly contest is held
for the most innovative, colorful and graphic Square Foot Garden.
Examples range from a teaching garden, to a gardening
course, display or project. Entry is open to any teacher and her
students in the United States or Canada in a public, private, or
home school of 7 or more students at any age. The teacher
conducts a class or course and with her students, builds a garden,
makes a school display, or creates a science fair project or a home
garden project. Previous cash winners may still enter each year
for honorable mention, and will be eligible again for cash prizes
in 3 years. For those from Canada, we only ask that you send the
extra shipping costs of $7.50 for the half price Lesson Plan everyone
will receive upon registering for the contest.
This award is in honor and memory of
Gail Bartholomew
Osgood.
(1954 – 2000)

Gail was one of the original members
of the Board of Directors
for the Square Foot Gardening Foundation. She was a fourth grade
teacher in a private school in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and
she strongly supported her father’s work by teaching SFG to school
children. We feel that this annual award is a fitting tribute to
honor Gail and her lifetime mission of instilling wonder and stimulating
new ideas in children. Her feeling was that this approach would
help them “want to learn” rather
than “have to learn.” Gardening
can encompass all of the subjects of education and can happen while
the student is having fun.

This photo was taken
at the Master Gardeners’ National Convention
in Houston, Texas.
Mel was the principal speaker that year and Gail manned the
SFG informational display booth. At the closing of the convention
dinner/dance, Mel and Gail danced to “The Eyes of Texas are upon
you.” You can tell by the picture that was a happy moment for both.

and creativity on projects for entry. Pre-registration is
